UKOKO

  • Very rare, heavy duty clay pot drums wrapped in deer skin, from the Ekiti region of Yorubaland. These hand drums have a sweet tone and are often played by women's groups, in a set of three or four, to accompany songs. Played either seated or slung over shoulders for playing in procession.

"Ikoko" means cooking pot in Yoruba language, hence this is from where these drums derive their name.

Please watch the videos to hear me demonstrating the sound of some newly made ukoko drums.(Their sound will deepen more after being "played in").
